I was recently ask by the very welcoming and friendly Loughton Methodist Church to design and make four windows for their new Creative Art Centre in Epping Forest, London. In partnership with the Christian Drama Resource Centre, the Church has embarked on an ambitious new project to build a purpose made Centre for the Creative Arts. Working with the community and local schools, the Centre will perform a variety of roles including theatre, dance and drama outreach work. Its a lovely project, and should be completed by May this year.

As you can see from the artwork, it takes the form of a hanging sculpture in six pieces. The colour scheme is rich blues and greens, with a dash of red, and includes images and symbolism associated with Baptism. It will be suspended on stainless steel wires above the font, and is due to be completed in time for the grand opening of this wonderful new church in May .

The wonderful new pod at St. Lawrence Church in Alton, Hampshire has recently won the top award from the John Ambrose Award for Architecture 2011. The pod was designed by architect Simon Goddard, of the Goddard Partnership and brings a new kitchen, toilets, meeting room and storage area to the Grade 1 listed building. I had the great privilege of designing and making the 35 sq.m glass screen which wraps around the pod. The screen illustrates the long history of the town of Alton, stretching back to the Roman and English Civil War periods, with other visual references to bygone local industries, the local school, and a map of the town dating from 1666.

I’ve recently started an interesting new commission for the Churches Conservation Trust. The project involves designing a series of stained glass windows in five churches in Lincolnshire. The commission is part of a new initiative called the “ArChWay Project”.

The project is designed to increase visitor numbers by developing the churches as a resource for local artists and arts groups and by opening visitors’ eyes to the amazing original art – carvings, wall paintings and stained glass, within the buildings. The churches will be offered as venues for arts or literature groups to meet, to hold exhibitions and to stage music, dance or theatre events.

At the moment I am spending time researching this fascinating topic by meeting and talking with local people in the area, gathering information on the mythology of this part of Lincolnshire, its history, local folklore, and rich heritage, in order to develop a sense of place.

This will eventually culminate in the designing of five stained glass windows in five churches which will act as a sort of treasure trail, helping to lead visitors from one church to the next. Stay tuned for more info as it develops!

St Dunstan’s Catholic Church in Woking is celebrating the unveiling of the second in a series of two specially commissioned stained glass windows. Both bespoke windows measure 13.5 square metres, and were designed by architectural glass artist Derek Hunt as a result of a donation made by an anonymous benefactor.

First founded in the town in 1925, St Dunstan’s relocated to a new site last year. As part of the new build, two feature windows were specially commissioned. The first, the Tabernacle window entitled ‘The Bread of Life’ was completed in July 2008 with the most recent addition located between the pews and the Sanctuary, installed this month (December 2009). The new screen, entitled ‘Proclaim the Good News’ was created using hand painted enamels, airbrushed paints and applied antique glass.

Proclaim the Good News

“I was delighted to be commissioned once again by St Dunstan’s to design the second screen to complement The Tabernacle window,” comments artist Derek Hunt. “I decided to use visual images inspired by Mark’s Gospel chapter 16 verse 15 which reads “Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.” The window is designed to act as a quiet aid to worship and enhance contemplation through the movement of light and colour.”

The glazed screen incorporates a natural theme with the suggestion of leaves, flowing water, the silhouette of trees and a white lily, the symbol of the Virgin Mary. The right hand panel has prisms running vertically which act as light catchers, to split and refract the light into a rainbow of colours as the sun passes across the window.
